Mattie Saunders

Mattie Saunders was born in Bedford, Virginia and is the oldest of seven children including five brothers and one sister.
After graduating from the high school in Virginia she moved to Joliet, IL and attended Madame C. J. Walker beauty school in Chicago.  She operated her beauty business in her home and was a student instructor at Ella Mae beauty school.
She met James R. Saunders and marred him on July 27, 1952.  In union they had three daughters and seven grandchildren (three grandsons and four grand-daughters).  In partnership they owned One Stop Store on Chicago Street and she assisted her husband in the business.
Mattie Saunders has been a member of Second Baptist Church for 56 years and has serviced as a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the gospel chorus, also secretary of the Jr. Matrons, chairperson of the church anniversary, youth assistant to Mrs. Elsie Smith, secretary of the ministers, deacon, trustees wives.  A member of the pastor Anniversary Board. At the present time serving as President captain of the building fund.  One year Mattie was honored as Woman of the Year.
She worked at Silver Cross Hospital in Labor and Delivery as an OB technician.  In her spare time she also worked at Amsurg and Salem nursing home.  She retired from the outpatient department after 42 years.  Mattie continues to care for patients in their homes.

Mattie served as president of the Eliza Kelly School PTA.

Mattie has worked as co-chair for the Jacob Banquet now serving as chairman and received a Jacob Leadership Award.

Mattie registers volunteers at Sacred Heart food service program.

Mattie serves on the board for Best Anger Adjusters business.

Mattie is a member of Mt. Zion widows group and chairman of the widows and widower ministries of Second Baptist Church & Community.

Mattie is the President of Faithful Samaritans.

Mattie is a member of Church Women United.

Mattie has been honored as Woman of the year by the Jolly Club.

Matties is a member of the Silver and Gold club.

All in all, Mattie loves helping people in need.  She is a prayer warrior, caregiver, Lord worker, dreamer, speech maker and a Big time Watermelon eater.
