The National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. was conceived by a group of women that recognized the need to establish a communications network between women’s organizations and the Congressional Black Caucus.
The National hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. was founded in 1974 by a small group of spirited women during the fourth Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Weekend. These black women met in a hotel room and organized a national forum to articulate the needs and concerns of women and children. Historically our agenda has been to impact public policy.

- Members meet on 1st Saturday of each month.
- Meetings begin at 3:00 pm.
- Meetings are held at Unity CDC, 1 Doris Avenue.

the Joliet Chapter
The Joliet Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc, was founded in 1991 under the direction of Dorothy J. Campbell. The charter members are Mrs. Gretta Whitted (first president), Dr. Mattie Barnes, Mrs. Helen McKenzie, Mrs. Deborah Summers, Ms. Robin Whitted, Mrs. Nancina Grays, Mrs. Sandra Betts, Mrs. Ora Jones, Mrs. Ruby Williams, and Mrs. Gwen Barlow. These concerned women saw a need for an active and collective voice on women’s issues in the Joliet community. NHBW Joliet Chapter carries out the national mission locally by creating an atmosphere which enables women to effect meaningful changes. NHBW works to improve the quality of life, facilitate family preservation, achieve self-empowerment, and promote economic development. Membership reflects a diversity of women from varied business, professional, and community disciplines crossing all economic, social and educational levels.
